National Registrar Team, LLC (known as "NRT") was established in 2002 to provide third-party certification audits of management systems based on international standards developed and maintained by the International Organization for Standardization, with an initial emphasis on environmental management systems (ISO 14001). Such systems were being deployed to national park units within the central United States with a need to conduct conformance audits in a cost-effective manner.
Originally, representatives from the National Park Service and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were active participants by completing the required ISO 14001 Lead Auditor training and participating in auditing teams to gain practical experience, led by certified lead auditors. Once the required number of conformance audits were completed, these participating auditors achieved lead auditor certifications through national and international bodies.
The original intent was to identify, train, and give an opportunity for auditors from federal agencies to gain direct experience, and through National Registrar Team, LLC, provide third-party certification audits of federal facilities.
The initial objective at the time National Registrar Team, LLC was established, which has continued over the two decades since, was to provide affordable third-party certification audits by experienced and credentialled conformance auditors, using international standards and protocols. Some of the original conformance audits continue today to provide third-party certification conformance audits for clients seeking this alternative method of gaining national and international recognition.
